4 (Not-So-Obvious) Signs That You May Have a Gas Line Leak

Did you know that if you have a gas line leak in your home, something as simple as turning on a light switch could send your entire house up in flames?  Well, in fact, it’s true!  And surprisingly enough, many small gas leaks go undetected for many months or even years before they eventually cause a problem or are lucky enough to get fixed before any problems ensue.

We all know the first sign of a gas leak by that lovely smell of sulfur or rotten eggs, but lucky for you, here are 4 other (not-so-obvious) signs that may help notify you of a possible gas leak in or around your home before it’s too late…

  1. Hissing, whistling, or blowing sounds around gas lines or gas appliances.
  2. Dead or discolored vegetation above or near a known gas line.
  3. Dust or dirt blowing up from the ground around a gas pipe.
  4. Water bubbling in wet or flooded areas around a gas pipe.

Ok, so you may have a gas leak, now what??  Here’s what to do in case you suspect a gas line leak:

  1. VACATE THE PREMISES & CALL YOUR LOCAL AUTHORITIES OR GAS COMPANY IMMEDIATELY!
  2. Do not operate any electrical appliances or devices (including cell phones or e-cigarettes) OR turn on or off any electrical switches prior to vacating the premises.
  3. Do not attempt to locate the leak OR turn off any supply lines.
  4. Do not use an open flame near the premises (including lighting a cigarette)
  5. Do not start any vehicles in the area until the site has been cleared by a professional.
  6. Once the site has been cleared…CALL YOUR FRIENDLY PLUMBERS AT DANIEL CORDOVA PLUMBING, DRAIN & SEWER TO MAKE ANY NECESSARY REPAIRS.

So there you have it!  Now don’t let yourself get stuck in a gassy (and potentially harmful) situation. Know the signs, and follow these steps, and you will be good to go!
