What Are Signs You Have a Gas Leak?
Do you smell rotten eggs? Hear hissing coming from a gas outlet? See lifeless or tarnished vegetation in specific areas of your yard, but not in others? See flames, dirt, or dust blowing out of or around a specific hole in the ground, or water fizzing in wet or flooded areas?
These are all signs that point to a gas leak.
If you notice any of these issues, leave your property immediately. Once in a safe location, report the leak to your local gas supply company.
What Causes Gas Leaks?
Natural gas appliances such as water heaters, dryers, and stoves will age and wear down over time. When they do, their seals wear down as well, or they break and eventually cause gas to leak.
Deficient aeration can also contribute to gas leaks. Carbon monoxide comes as a byproduct of gas outlets such as chimneys and exhaust fans. If these outlets become obstructed, they can cause gas leaks.
Roofing work has also been known to knock furnaces and other ventilation systems out of alignment, which can lead to leaks.
How Can You Avoid Gas Leaks?
To prevent gas leaks, you will need to install emergency shut-off valves. An example of these valves is an earthquake shut-off valve. These valves are designed to switch off automatically in the event of an earthquake. Its overload surge valve will turn off as soon as an overload is detected, or when a leak occurs. If your valve remains off even after the earthquake and aftermath tremors have passed, call our technicians to have the valves rearranged, as well as have your gas line inspected for potential leaks.
